Car rental in Palermo
Pointless in the historic centre, useful for Monreale and the Sicilian coast. Here's how to think about it.
Restricted zones and narrow alleyways: what to know before driving in Palermo
Palermo's historic centre has an extensive restricted traffic zone and alleyways often too narrow for a car. If your goal is to see Piazza Pretoria, skip the car: the centre is comfortably walkable. If your goal is exploring Monreale, Cefalù or the Tyrrhenian coast independently, renting makes sense — pick up the car at a car park outside the centre and don't attempt to drive it into the alleyways.
When it makes sense
For Monreale, Cefalù, the Tyrrhenian coast and inland villages — western Sicily is best explored by car, with your own schedule and free scenic stops.
When it doesn't
For staying in Palermo: the historic centre is compact, with narrow alleyways and a strictly enforced restricted zone. A car here is only a parking problem.
